2 years ago I made a resolution: buy only USA Made or thrifted clothes for a whole year.
I made a New Years resolution in two years ago. My resolution was this: for a whole year, I would only replenish my wardrobe with clothes that were Made in the USA or thrifted. My clothes have always been important to me; but it wasn’t until 2018 that I began seriously thinking about where these clothes came from and how they were made. My Purposeful Wardrobe Resolution has changed my perspective, my lifestyle, and the way I run my business. For sake of total transparency, I have to say I kept my resolution to about a level of 80%; I did buy a few items off the rack that year. Overall, though, this resolution has evolved into a lifestyle for me. 2018 was the year I began shopping on purpose.
So here are the “rules” I set for myself during my challenge. My new clothes had to be one of the following:
So, basically, Made in the USA, thrifted, or gifted was my “new clothes criteria”.
It goes way back…
I believe God gives each one of us different interests. Fashion is a major one for me. When I was 10, I started a side-hustle so I’d have the spending money to for that perfect outfit from the mall. By the time I was 13 I was spending almost all of my free time on my moms sewing machine. I’d make my own clothing and experiment with different designs. When I graduated Highschool, I went to work full time to develop my own line of Made in USA Baby and Children’s clothing: Gracious May! My sisters tease me about my weakness for faux fur, and I recall significant events by outfit rather than date. The day I got my braces off: dip-dyed cardigan, white empire top, and wide leg jeans. Large or small, I believe we have the responsibility to use our gifts in a way that glorifies God. No matter how materialistic a love for fashion, faux fur, and fringe boots may seem, I believe it can be used to glorify God. The Bible says that whatever we do, we are to do it all to the glory of God (1 Cor. 10:31). When I determined to change the way I shopped 2 years ago, I made it my aim to start shopping on purpose. I was tired of being lead by impulse and trend. I wanted to start shopping with a “why” behind my buy. I wanted that “why” to be more than a flash sale.

With my 2018 wardrobe resolution, I wanted to know where my money was going and how it was impacted the people I bought from. This put me on the hunt for sustainable clothing brands with real stories and “real people” behind them. I honestly wanted to step up and support people like myself. It makes a huge impact when my customers loyally support Gracious May. I wanted to give that same support to other made in the USA clothing brands like my own.
Stepping up:
When I made the resolution to buy only Made in the USA or thrifted clothes for a whole year, I had been running Gracious May for almost 9 years. On a daily basis I would tell people how important it was to “shop small”, “buy made in the USA products”, and “invest in local business”. When it came to my own shopping practices, though, I fell short (I know, major confession, right!). When I made the resolution to only replenish my wardrobe with Made in the USA Clothes, it was in part because I wanted to start practicing what I preached.

Practically speaking, when we buy made in the USA, it is easier to ensure they are being produced ethically. It became important to me to know that the people who made my clothing were being treated fairly. I wanted to make sure the people who made what I wore were happy and note being taken advantage of. This is just is easier to do this when your clothes are made in a US factory rather than overseas.

Another reason for my Purposeful Wardrobe resolution was that I was burnt by the quality most major retailers were producing. With fast fashion taking over the apparel industry, quality has taken a serious nosedive. I would grab a shirt off the rack and it felt as thin as the Kleenex on my coffee table. I’d feel it and cringe, knowing it would fall apart after one trip through my washer and dryer. I had become tired of spending my money on this stuff. I wanted clothes that were built better than this. What’s more is that there was no value or character in this clothing beyond a flashy trend. I felt in my gut that a wardrobe could be something more meaningful than following a trend.

But where does the “thrifted” part come in?
So I have explained the “Made in USA” part of my wardrobe resolution, but where does the “thrifted“ part come in? I’ll tell you. Before Gracious May became a full time job, I ran a small vintage and second hand resale business. I’d hunt down second hand clothes, clean them up, and resell them in my little resale shop. It was a thrill to unearth forgotten gems and give them a second chance to shine. When a piece of clothing still looks great after serving it’s first owner, it was created with thought and purpose. Vintage clothes speak of a day when wardrobes were built for people rather than fads. This clothing has always been a part of my life so it fell seamlessly into my wardrobe resolution.

So this is part one, telling you where it all began for me. This resolution turned lifestyle has been such an eye opener. It has shown me that every action has a ripple effect. When we buy clothes, we are being a tiny rudder for change in one direction or another. We are telling the world how we want it to run. If we continue to buy clothes that have been manufactured unethically, we are telling the world that it is okay to treat people poorly.

I have to be honest: I had my ups and downs in keeping this resolution. I did buy a few items off the rack in 2018. But the goal remained and, despite a few failures, I picked up and moved on with that vision before me. Buying Made in the USA clothes and shoes has become a lifestyle that outlived my 2018 resolution. I am on a journey toward a purposeful wardrobe; a wardrobe that transcended trends and make a positive impact on the world around me.

What does it take to support a local businesses? Big government? A specific leader in office? A majority in congress?
No.
It takes you and me making the effort. Making the effort to connect with our neighborhoods, the businesses on main streets, and the people that live next door.
Simple? Yes. The easiest choice? Not always.

2 years ago, I made this New Years resolution: only buy clothing that was made in the USA or thrifted for a whole year. I was tired of what fast-fashion trends had to offer, I wanted products with value. This decision changed my outlook as a business owner in ways I did not expect. When I launched into this resolution, I had already been running my own made in the USA clothing brand for 9 years (Gracious May). With this personal challenge, I wanted to up my effort to support businesses like my own. What I did not expect was the way the Lord used this resolution-turned-lifestyle to change me as a business owner.
Back story:
Fashion and business have always been a huge part of my life. As I mentioned in a previous post, I started my first “business” when I was in middle school and launched Gracious May straight out of Highschool. A major joy in my life is creating products that customers love. I know firsthand that each and every sale makes a HUGE difference to a small business owner. You might have seen the slogan going around: “when you buy from a small business, an actual person does a happy dance”. It’s a true story. Every sale still feels just as good as the first.
What I didn’t Expect:
When I set out to shop only Made in the USA or thrifted clothes for a whole year, I did not expect it to so significantly impact the way I ran Gracious May. I go into deep detail in this post, but for readers looking for the bottom line: I launched the Gracious May ladies footwear line, I launched marketplace for Made in USA products, and I began putting quality guarantees on all shoes purchased from GraciousMay.com!
Here is how my Wardrobe Resolution changed Gracious May:
I launched my own line of Made in the USA Women’s Shoes:
When I made my resolution to buy clothes and shoes that were made in the USA, I found it nearly impossible to find made in the USA women’s shoes. Launching an American Made women’s shoe had been a huge goal here at Gracious May, but we’d been so focused on children’s shoes that it hadn’t happened yet. The realization that there was such a deficit in the American made women’s shoe market prompted my team and I to fast-track product development in this area. The Gracious May Mama Jane launched in March 2019. These leather flats are classy and neutral, with a glove-like fit. They are designed to be a comfortable every day shoe; perfect whether at home or on the go! The Mama Jane has been out less than a year and are already Gracious May customer favorites!

One of the things I looked for when I was shopping made in the USA for myself was quality. It is true, USA made products are a little more expensive than their imported counterparts. A major goal for me in sharing my journey is to spark a movement. I want to regenerate an appreciation for well-crafted, USA made goods. I want to encourage others to seek out products with value. I want people to know that how you shop can change the world. I want to see every major retailer carve out a place on their floor for Made in the USA products. I want small businesses to benefit from it all.

As I’ve shared my Made in USA Wardrobe Journey with you, I have realized something. I set my mind on one goal, but the Lord had several lessons for me to learn on the way. He used that one goal to prompt me toward a path that was lined with 100 different opportunities to grow. If the Lord is leading you to do something, even it seems “small”, seek Him and do it. He may have something in it for you that you never would have imagined.
As a child of God through Jesus Christ, nothing is wasted. All things work together for good. No matter how hard, there is purpose in everything. Keep looking to Jesus. The joy of hindsight will one day be yours. God is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think.

Most of you are probably familiar with the recent buzz over the “plastic straw crisis”. There is a lot of uproar over a widely-accepted source that states US consumers go through approximately 182.5 billion straws per year (QZ). This translates into about 73 thousand tons of plastic straws per year. 73 thousand tons. That’s a lot, right? But you know what blew my mind: Americans throw away close to 14 million tons of clothes per year (Newsweek). 14 million tons. This means 200x more waste generated by fast fashion trends than the disposal of plastic straws.

No matter what side of the plastic straw argument you are on, I think it can be agreed that numbers like 14 million tons deserve some attention.
When I launched into my resolution to buy only made in the USA or thrifted clothes for a whole year, I did not know about these statistics. I just knew I was exhausted by the disposable quality I found at most major retailers. I did not know this quality was actually creating such a crisis.
I want to state that my concern over environmental issues stems from my desire to be a good steward of what God has created. Because I follow Jesus Christ, I want to honor His creation. My decisions are not grounded in my love for the earth, but, rather, the One who made it. I want to make good choices for the environment because I believe that’s what would please the Lord.

Three years ago I was on Instagram and saw something that made me stop in my tracks. I was scrolling through the feed of an inspiring mama who migrated from Boston, MA to Uganda with her husband and family. They are serving there as a missionaries now. She posted a picture on her feed that really impacted me. It was what appeared to be acres and acres of used clothing. It was a field in Uganda, filled with piles of 2nd hand clothes. Her caption was something along the lines of: “let’s be mindful of the impact our choices are making on the world around us.” The message resonated and I did not forget it. I recently contact this woman and she gave me permission to share the photos.
I am a huge advocate for second hand marketplaces; but, sadly, most 2nd hand stores can only sell through 20% of the clothes we donate (Newsweek). Nobody wants fast-fashion leftovers. These clothes are not built to last, they are built to satisfy a trend. We can blame “greedy corporations”, but are we actually demanding more as consumers? That’s the question I put to myself two years ago.

My Purposeful Wardrobe Journey:
Two years ago I launched a personal journey towards purposeful fashion. I made a resolution to only buy clothes and shoes that were made in the USA or thrifted for a whole year. I wanted to up my support of small businesses like my own, and make the best use of existing resources. Hunting down clothing brands that manufacture their products in the USA is my primary focus, but buying second hand was also a big part of my resolution. If you can find a piece of clothing that is still fantastic after serving it’s first owner, you’ve found something with value. Another bonus is that the used clothing boutiques I buy from are often run by small business owners who directly benefit from my support.

We are shopping trends that shift faster than we can choose our outfit in the morning. We are buying clothes that don’t last. We are being led about by the bit and bridle of the fast fashion industry. We are buying clothes that were designed for fads and not for people. Sustainable quality is achievable. We as the consumers need to demand more.
I mentioned it in a previous post, but my love for second hand fashion goes way back. Before I launched Gracious May I actually ran my own second hand fashion boutique. Even further back, in my early childhood, my dad ran a huge second hand resale shop near Kansas City. He specialized in antique furniture and eventually added in a huge selection of vintage and one of a kind apparel. I grew up watching my dad restore these vintage pieces, giving them a second chance to serve, a second chance to be loved.
A second chance. I think that speaks volumes with respect to the cry of the human heart: we all want a Second Chance. It is a daily source of hope for me that that second chance is freely available through Jesus Christ; His death and resurrection provide a second chance to all who come to Him in faith.

With all this talk of wardrobe resolutions and purposeful fashion, I don’t want to funnel you into the belief that any of this in itself a source of fulfillment. Purposeful wardrobes don’t fulfill, minimalism doesn’t fulfill. Only Christ fulfills.

On my purposeful fashion journey, I uncovered some amazing facts that reinforced my belief that our wardrobe choices can change the world around us.
I want to add the preface to this post that my heart and desire is to see a true revival of US manufacturing. Buying Made in the USA clothes and shoes has become a big part of my wardrobe purpose. The main thing I want you to take away from this post, above and beyond my talk of a made in the USA movement, is that your wardrobe choices can make a difference. The American woman has an average of 103 pieces of apparel in her wardrobe. When I read that, it sounded like a lot. So I took a rough inventory of all the clothes I owned. Let’s just say that I was *cough* on the high end of that statistical average. As I thought on this number, I realized that if every US citizen kept just 7 USA made garments in their wardrobe, we would stimulate demand for 2.2 billion made in the USA products. I went a step further and combined this number with my 9 years of experience in the apparel manufacturing industry. The result? That 2.2 billion made in the USA products would stimulate roughly 313,000 full time jobs. 313,000 jobs. Talk about amazing!

Check my math! I don’t mind. These numbers sound crazy when you think of something so simple as just keeping 7 Made in the USA items in your wardrobe, but here is the breakdown so you can see it for yourself!:
327,000,000 US Citizens in the United States at the time this statistic was produced.
Multiply 327,000,000 by 7 made in the USA garments and you get 2,289,000,000. Yes, I rounded down to 2.2 billion made in the USA products, just for sake of total fairness; but as you can see, the numbers are closer to 2.3 billion products!!!
I combined those numbers with my manufacturing experience: Here at Gracious May, one of our contact seamstresses produces an average of 20 finished units per day (of either clothes or shoes). This comes out to 7,300 units annually. Bonus: Gracious May’s contract workers have an above-average salary for wage earners ages 20-40. Just had to put that pro-ethical-manufacturing tidbit in there!!!
If you take that 2.2 billion US made product demand, and divide it by a 7,300 unit production capacity, you’ll find that we would create around 313,561.6 jobs.

Historically, clothing has been a tool for cultural revolution. It may sound crazy, but it’s true. I was recently profiling the career of one of the most well known fashion designers in the world. Though deceased, her name remains an icon in the high fashion industry. This woman revolutionized ladies fashion as we know it, creating previously unheard-of fashion trends. She became one of the most widely emulated trendsetters in history. When I read about what one fashion designer did through a few groundbreaking statement pieces, I was reinforced in my mission. Our clothes can make a difference.

I read a statistic that says US citizens spend more money on shoes and accessories than on higher education (Psychology Today). Another statistics says that Americans spend twice the amount of time shopping for clothes than we do for food (Forbes). In order to use our wardrobe as a tool for positive change, we need to be purposeful with our wardrobe choices. We are already doing the shopping; we are spending the time and money, we just need to shop in a way that will benefit our local economy. Buying clothes and shoes that are made in the USA is my effort towards a positive change.
One of my goals in sharing my 2018 Wardrobe Resolution with you is to spark a Made in USA movement. I want to revive US manufacturing. I want people to realize that well-crafted products are worth their investment. I want people to know that when they buy a piece of clothing that is Made in the USA, their money stays closer to the communities that directly affect them.

There area lot of shrouded terms like “ethical fashion” and “conscious consumerism”. To be honest, it seems to me like everyone has their own idea of what these terms mean. As I’ve actually walked the walk of conscious consumerism and sought out purposeful fashion options, I have realized those terms boil down to something pretty simple. It’s really just this: know where your money is going, and make sure it supports what is right.

It seems like a small thing, to have just 7 made in USA items in your closet, but every effort makes a difference. Starting small is better than not starting at all. I want to steward well the resources God has given me. I want to avoid choices that are destroying the community in which I live. I want to make an effort to improve the economy in which I work.
By sharing my own journey, I want to encourage people to shop made in the USA clothes and shoes themselves. It is worth it to seek out value. It feels good to support people who are walking in the same shoes as you (no pun intended!).
If you want to see a change, you have to be willing to walk the walk. That was one of the things that hit me between the eyes at the onset of my 2018 Purposeful Wardrobe resolution. I hope that sharing my journey toward building and maintaining a purposeful wardrobe inspires you. I hope you will continue to follow as I share.
Don’t be afraid to start small. Great things starts small, and nothing is impossible with God. He can use one person, to do the work of a thousand; He can use a simple resolution to spark a movement.
Shopping Made in the USA clothes and shoes has been an eye opener for me. Hunting down the best made in USA clothing brands has been rewarding.
